Stronger Together
LIFE RIPARIAS Field Days 2025, an Interregional cooperation
|
Each year, the LIFE RIPARIAS team unites across regions for dedicated fieldwork days — not only to tackle invasive alien species (IAS), but also to strengthen the collaboration that drives this cross-regional effort forward. And this year was no exception. |
June 3rd – Flanders: Early Intervention on the IJse River
The team gathered in Hoeilaart (Flemish Brabant) to manage a source population of Hydrocotyle ranunculoides (floating pennywort) along the IJse River, near the border with Wallonia and Brussels. Working in close collaboration with the Province of Flemish Brabant, which manages the watercourse, the team initiated control efforts on a pond directly connected to the river. This early-stage intervention is key to preventing further spread downstream and protecting local biodiversity.

June 5–6th – Wallonia: Draining the Threat in Braine-l’Alleud
In Wallonia, the team met in Braine-l’Alleud for a two-day effort to eradicate Elodea densa (Greater pondweed) from a municipal pond currently being drained for full access. Thanks to a successful partnership with GBRS, a group of scientific divers, a handmade filter system was installed to prevent plant fragments from escaping into the river network — a critical step in stopping further invasions.

Team Building With a Purpose
These field days are not only about fieldwork. They play a vital role in fostering bonds between partners in Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels, building trust, understanding, and the foundations for long-term collaboration. By working side by side, the LIFE RIPARIAS team grows stronger — just like the ecosystems we aim to protect.
