Crayfish species
This group includes the 3 alien crayfish species of EU concern. As these animals are difficult to detect in deep waters, their distribution is probably underestimated in the pilot area. It is, therefore, likely that new species and new locations will be found with enhanced surveillance throughout the project as a consequence of past aquarium or garden pond escape.
Invasive crayfish usually have a wide ecological amplitude and are able to establish in various freshwater conditions, often in very high densities. These omnivorous ecosystem transformers are detrimental to native plants, macro-invertebrates, amphibians and fish due to competition, predation and disease transmission.
